Look in the preference of the Gnome CD player, IIRC it points to /cdrom, try with
/dev/cdrom and check if it works...

P.S. After adding a user to a new group (correct me if i'm wrong), you should
logout and login to the change to take effect , try the command "groups" to show
the groups a user is in...
