I have the same setup with no difficulties. My CD-RW works fine as
a slave on the secondary channel.
You will of course need scsi support and scsi emulation build into your
kernel for the CD-RW to work; The stock Debian kernel does.
In lilo.conf add
append="hdd=ide-scsi"
