Was it perhaps that you were unaware that pon defaults to 'provider' unless
you give it an argument? There is a bug in the stable install script: it
calls pppconfig without the 'noname' option thus encouraging the user to
give his connection a name, and later calls pon with no argument so that it
tries to use 'provider'. The ppp package includes a set of example
'provider' scripts, which, of course, won't work.
