Not precisely an answer to your question, but have a look at CUPS
(apt-get install cupsys-bsd, but get the woody packages), the Common
Unix Printing System. All your printers are visible (and printing) on
your network 30 seconds after installing cupsys on all
workstations. Configuration works via a web interface. Works great
here.
