My hardware is a Siemens Xpert: PII 333MHz/128Mb/10Gb/ATI rage, all purchased together
december 1998. Hopefully it will all be supported by now. The soundcard is some kind
of built in SB clone, so I'm not sure if I'll even try to get that working.

I'm beginning to get the picture now - I don't have apt, a lot of packages are
brokenly-installed, and I'm going to have to scratch 2.0 and install 2.2 onto a set of
virgin partitions.

The best help I've received so far was from Andrew Sullivan (thanks, Andrew!), who
made the following suggestions by private e-mail:

1) I should save the XF86Config file which will be one of /etc/XF86Config,
/etc/X11/XF86Config, or /usr/lib/X11/XF86Config before I scratch the 2.0 installation.

2) The X server I'm going to need for the ATI rage is called Mach64.

3) I should skip the xf86config program that tries to start up during installation,
and instead install the xf86setup package, and use the program XF86Setup to get the
GUI working.

4) I should select a "preconfiguration" which is close-ish to what I want, avoid using

dselect to customise it, and then just let the package system resolve its dependencies
automatically. Afterwards, I should use apt to install anything I missed.

Andrew also gave a concise run-down on the differences between GNOME and KDE, but I'm
going to have to investigate further before I know which to use. Do they both work
well under Debian? Is it possile to have both installed, and switch between them
(without too much hassle)? Are they both easy to uninstall, once I decide which I like
better?
