Since I do not know what specific card you are using I can only reccomend that you read the Ethernet-HOWTO with special consideration to the section "3.4. Problems with NE1000 / NE2000 cards (and clones)" and tell you how I solved my similar problem.

 yes, he will have to do this when he wants the card to be recognized at
boot time, however its easier, and requires a whole lot fewer reboots to
load and unload the module manually, trying different parameters until
it finally (hopefully) works.  once the correct settings are known, he
can pass those along to LILO, just as you described.
