Re: Hard disk forces BIOS upgrade - but can I use it safely before upgrading ?
at least linux doesn´t use the bios´ detections, so you can use the whole
harddisk with it, just remember that the partition you want to boot from
has to be within the first 1024 cylinders, so you may want to partition
you drive something like
/dev/hda1 10 mb /boot
/dev/hda2 x mb win95
and some partitions like swap, /, etc
install your (b)zImage in /boot/ and put lilo on /dev/hda and you should be
fine, without even the need for a new bios (which can have other, good or bad, effects, though).
there is also the hard-disk-upgrade-howto, which is very helpful
/usr/doc/HOWTO/mini/Hard-Disk-Upgrade.gz
