As for defining a user-database. This needs to be on the file server so that NFS
will work properly. The UIDs of the clients must match the UIDs of the file
server so that each user gets rights to the proper files. We use NIS to
accomplish this. NIS can be used to distribute many bits of info like
/etc/passwd, /etc/hosts, /etc/auto.amnt (autofs map), and more.
