I tried splay, and here is what I got:

@phoenix:[/home/ssahmed] splay /usr/mp3/zen.mp3 
splay: Failed to open sound device.

I got the same error message when I specified the device file to be
/dev/audio, /dev/audio1, and /dev/dsp (which is the default I think).

I have never tried anything beyond audio CDs so you are probably right.
