I'd say it's telling you something is toast :)  (Sorry for the technical
jargon ...)

Seriously, I don't know, though it sounds like something is definitely
amiss.

You are correct that the dd command simply tries to determine whether
the cdrom can be accessed; it does nothing useful other than read bytes
in from the cdrom and throw them in the bit bucket.

You have a CD in the drive, right?
