printing ansi strings

Hi everybody,

I have a small but annoying problem. I want to display ansi strings
(escaped sequences) on the console. For example, when I do

cat /usr/doc/bitchx/bx.ans

This gives a the right colors, but wrong characters. Normally, I would get
nice shaded blocks (the ones in your ascii table), but now I get weird
foreign language characters. Also, when I start up bitchx, the startup
ansi screen is displayed correctly, but when i use a script that does
direct ansi strings, the characters deteriorate ;) (I believe this has
something to do with bitchx's built-in ansi routines).

Should I be searching for problems with character encoding and codepages?
If so, which codepages should i use?

Thanks!
