Debian thread-safe xlibs for x11amp compiling?

I'm trying to do a roll-your-own x11amp, but can't get past the
configure script.  I get the following message:

checking for thread-safe xlibs... no
configure: error: You need to have thread-safe xlibs to use x11amp.

Wha?
