system frequently screws up when printing

Hi,

when I try to print to my HPdeskjet 890 (attached to /dev/lp1)
the system frequently locks up after printing some lines and
I have to reboot the system. No obvious log entry.

Any hints what to do?

I have a Dual Pentium II machine, Debian Hamm,
lprng 3.4.2-5 and Linux version 2.0.35 installed.
