apropos fails, makewhatis doesn't exist
I'm sending this from a Debian 2.0 system (i386). Currently I'm
having only one irritating problem: apropos fails. Well, it's
installed, and it runs, but it replies to *any* query with "Nothing
appropriate", even "apropos bash" or "apropos ls".
Reading of Usenet hints to me that I need to run (or have cron run)
the "makewhatis" command, but it's not installed on my system
("find / -name makewhatis"). I'm at version 2.3.10-65, and dpkg -S
indicates that this is the package that's responsible for apropos.
I tried reading the apropos man page, but it's a typical Unix-style
man page in that it assumes I already know how man pages are indexed.
Is this a bug in man-db that I should report. If not, what do I need
to do to correct this?
