bash problem - cannot telnet to my box

Hi,

I just did a partial upgrade to slink - partial because of limited
bandwidth - and now I cannot use telnet or ssh to my box. After
entering the password I get:-

Linux elm 2.1.126 #4 Wed Oct 28 19:37:29 WST 1998 i586 unknown
Last login: Sun Nov 8 13:13:40 on ttyp0 from elm.cbcfreo.wa.edu.au.
You have mail.
bash: 0: command not found

The upgrade included all required and important files. I may have missed
a library, but apt seems happy enough.

elm# apt-get check
Updating package file cache...done
Updating package status cache...done
Checking system integrity...ok

This is when using my local mirror. Come to think of it the mirror does
not match the Packages file too well.

Any hints on fixing this one?
