You can change the look of any X-application by modifying its socalled
Xresources. Most of them are explained in the application's man pages.
xterm is a good example with a really big man page. In the directory 
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/app-defaults/ you can find the default resources for
many applications.

To use xresources you create a file .Xresources in your home directory where
you put the definitions that you like changed. This file will be used
everytime you log into X. For testing you can merge your personal
definitions into the running ones with the command:
$ xrdb -merge ~/.Xresources 

And take a look at the app "editres".

I found enlightenment does not crash that often. But there are other
pitfalls. I think E is only complete in the frozen debian distribution
"slink" which is not yet totally stable. For customization of window
managers in general take a look at http://themes.org
