 You can probably use WinZip to split home.tgz into two pieces. Then you
can do the partial extraction and hopefully get what you need. This is
probably what you'll have to do, short term.

 The suggestion of using dd is a good one, if you can defragment the file
so it's contiguous, and figure out the right block offset to use. It's a
bit more advanced, though.

 Or, you can wait until there's a fix in the 2.3 or 2.4 kernels... :-/
