Somehow I managed to hose the installation completely. At first I took
the same approach as you, but then xdm didn't work, only startx.
Then I followed Eric Meijer's advice not to use SuSe's xf86config
but Debian's, and now the server dies with this message:

I assume that something in between these two steps is causing the
trouble.

I hope someone can help me,

When reporting a problem related to a server crash, please send
the full server output, not just the last messages
