This is because leaving E does not stop the sound driver :(
Look for "esd" in the output of the command "ps ax". Then press "kill
<number>", where <number> is the PID number of esd (the number to the left
of esd, at the beginning of the line).
Sound sould be okay then.

This is really a bug in the e packages. Please submit a bug report to
submit@bugs.debian.org (or ask me to do it :)

Start at www.linux.org. Try SLab, Rosegarden, and a couple of other
programs. Wait for ALSA to be ready (a new sound driver).
