There is program memtest86 for x86 arch's in the hwtools package. It
is actually a disk image that you copy to a floppy and it runs from the
floppy on a reboot. Read /usr/doc/hwtools/memtest86.README.gz for
instructions. I don't know if it is better but it something else to
try.
