$ xv

 - right click in xv window to get control panel window to appear.
 - click on grab button to make `xv grab' window panel appear.
 - choose your method.  
   e.g. grab after 0 second delay :
          - click on `grab' button.
          - grab window disappears.
          - left-click in any X window and a duplicate appears as an `xv' 
            window.
          - right-click in new xv window and select `save' to save as GIF
            or whatever.
