If lilo just say LI and seemingly dies

I think this is a FAQ but I cannot find references to my new problem. I am
attempting to boot Linux from NT but it just says LI and seemingly dies.

My problem bagan after I acquired an IDE drive and and compiled a new
kernel. Linux now says the IDE is the main drive instead of the SCSI drive
that was there before and had the root and everything installed. I went
thru' the lilo and dd business several times but I cannot seem to solve my
problem. Back to my question what does it mean and how can I solve the LI
problem?
