well, i hate to disappoint you, but this is nonsense.

By Intel design mmx registers are mapped into fp registers,
so ANY OS who knows how to save fp registers during
context switch is by default mmx aware.
Linux definitely knows how to save fp registers.

I don't know is xquake mmx aware or not and
have no idea what is source of the problem
