I have no idea about this one, but do let me know if you find out, as
it's a problem I have as well!

You can use setterm for this. I use the following in my .bash_profile to
set some bits to come out in yellow rather than white (the bits which are
in italic on the manpage, ie variables and the like):
setterm -ulcolor bright yellow
Hope this helps. I find it very useful.
