Check out the CDROM-HOWTO file in /usr/doc/HOWTO.  The 1.2.13 kernel wouldn't
use my cd-rom correctly (it would find the ide cd-rom, but not be able to
mount any cd's, nor play audio cds correctly).  I eventually upgraded to 
1.3.30, which correctly used my cd-rom.
