install questions

I would like to thank Bruce for the beautiful gold-cd delivery.

I installed Linux on a 2GB Conner scsi drive with a buslogic adapter
card. I have a few questions. I will appreciate any advice.

1. Prior to installing Linux, I have a partition for Solaris 2.4, and
a partition for Win95. When the debian installation was running fdisk, I
noticed that it listed the Solaris partition as "Linux Swap". I was
afraid that, when Linux was up and running, it might begin to use this
Solaris partition to do swapping. So, I changed the Solaris partition
to "Linux/Minix". I then created 2 partitions for Linux, and Linux
Swap. But then, when I later tried to boot Solaris, it would not boot,
until I changed the type back from Linux/Minix to Linux Swap.

My question is: What should I do to avoid

-- having to constantly change the type of the Solaris partition, and to avoid
-- having Linux use the Solaris partition as its swap space?

2. While running fdisk verify partition program (from dos shell), it
warned that the partitions were overlapping. From the way fdisk behaves,
it seems that the user is simply screwed by the fdisk program. My
question is: Is there a simple solution to fix this problem? My guess
is that if I do not fix this problem, then one partion might be overwritten
by another.

3. I cannot recall seeing the Linux system installed saying anything
about my buslogic card. On the other hand, I have seen it print out
messages about Adaptec card. Should I be concerned?

4. It appears that the xf86config program has bugs.

Examples.

-- After I run it, xinit failed because it could not find /dev/mouse.
I created a link from /dev/ps2mouse to /dev/mouse. This got rid of
the mouse error message.

-- I chose Diamond Stealth 64 video vram with 2048kb. But the
configuration file still has the line 2048kb commented out (with #).

After xf86config, and xinit, I was able to get a xterm window. No
colors. I need to find time to do more investigations. Meanwhile, I
will appreciate any advice.

cheers, Luby
