Networking probs, ifconfig?

Hello,

Still working my way around debian (I have 1.93R6).

What I cannot yet do is to network with an existing Sun Network. What
I currently can see (dmesg) is:

I am not sure if my ethernet module is loading correctly. All I see is:

	"loading device 'eth0'..."

Is it supposed to give the ethernet card number as well?

Also, When I do "ifconfig eth0", I get:

----- Begin Included Message -----

eth0 Link encap:UNSPEC HWaddr 00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00

          TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0

I do not understand this. I expect the ethernet addr would have been
the "HWaddr"

Does it also mean that the network masks and things are not correct?
They have been set in /etc/networks/netmasks

Does this mean that my ethernet card is not configured correctly? It's
a 3com card.

Is there a FM where I can read about systematically testing the various
networking interfaces?

I am used to SunOS networking, and I have noticed a few differences
between Linux and SunOS, such as /etc/hostname.eth0, etc,

Or can someone give me some ready pointers to files that should
have different bits of info (e.g. /etc/ethers, etc/hosts, etc, etc)

I cannot ping anywhere, by name or number, far less telnet.

I have tried all my SunOS tricks, but they don't seem to work...

I just noticed Ricardo's email:

]I've just installed the base (5 disk install) plus the netbase and netstd
]packages. The setup is all A-OK. :) I can ping my main server fine, and
]vice versa. Now I tried telnetting from my other machine into the

I wish I was getting this far!

Help. Derryck
