What are the Ethernet probe results from bootup?  Run dmesg, and see
if it recognizes the 3c501 properly.

No, tcp/ip is in the kernel, I just installed a machine's packages via
an NFS mount (base was built from the latest disks).

This is what the above mentioned machine looks like.  The HWaddr
should be the ethernet address of the card.  If it is not a valid
address, I would say your kernel is probably not recognizing it
properly.
