Perdona que insista pero es que muchos usuarios de "gnome-terminal"
hemos visto como se ha vuelto inservible a causa de las "locales".  Así
tengo yo mi configuración, prueba de nuevo a ver que tal:

- después de usar "dpkg-reconfigure locales" te debería quedar algo más
o menos como esto en "/etc/locale.gen" (no escojas en principio el
soporte del euro):

# This file lists locales that you wish to have built. You can find a
list# of valid supported locales at /usr/share/i18n/SUPPORTED. Other
# combinations are possible, but may not be well tested. If you change
# this file, you need to rerun locale-gen.
#
# XXX GENERATED XXX
#
# NOTE!!! If you change this file by hand, and want to continue
# maintaining manually, remove the above line. Otherwise, use the

es_ES ISO-8859-1

- Y en "/etc/environment" podrías tener algo como esto otro:

LC_MESSAGES=es_ES
LC_ALL=es_ES
LANG=es_ES

De todas formas, si tus "locales" están como "es_ES ISO8859-15" y
"es_ES@euro", el "gnome-terminal" te fallará fatalmente a menos que
instales algunas fuentes con soporte para el euro tales como:

xfonts-100dpi-transcoded y xfonts-75dpi-transcoded
