Procure ler as Notas de Lançamento de uma versão anterior,
elas ajudam a entender algumas estratégias de atualização de
sistemas completos (e complexos).
Geralmente a recomendação inclui atualizar o apt/aptitude,
depois o kernel e por fim o resto dos programas.
No man do aptitude você encontra os estados:
