Ich finde meine HD nicht mehr (2.6.8-rc1)

ich habe mir heute einen neuen Kernel kompiliert (2.6.8-rc1).
Unter "ATA/ATAPI/MFM/RLL support (IDE)" habe ich folgendes gefunden:

(BLK_DEV_IDE_SATA)
There are two drivers for Serial ATA controllers.
The main driver, "libata", exists inside the SCSI subsystem
and supports most modern SATA controllers.
The IDE driver (which you are currently configuring) supports
a few first-generation SATA controllers.
In order to eliminate conflicts between the two subsystems,
this config option enables the IDE driver's SATA support.
Normally this is disabled, as it is preferred that libata
supports SATA controllers, and this (IDE) driver supports
PATA controllers.
If unsure, say N.

Wenn ich das richtig verstehe, soll ich unter "SCSI" den SATA-Support
einschalten. Das habe ich auch gemacht und den Treiber SCSI_SATA_VIA fest in
den Kernel einkompiliert.
Leider kann ich damit den Rechner nicht mehr starten, weil der Kernel keine
root-Partition findet.
Ich boote per grub und habe dort schon alle möglichen Devicenamen für die
"root="-Option gesetzt, aber nichts hilft.
Bisher ist die root-Partition /dev/hde1. Ich habe aber auch schon /dev/sdX1
ausprobiert. Leider ohne Erfolg :(
Kurz meine Systemkonfiguration:
Debian Sarge, Kernel 2.6.7 (noch)
Athlon XP 2600+
VIA-Chipsatz
Samsung SP0812C am SATA-Port
/dev/hda: Samsung DVD-ROM SD-616E
/dev/hdd: Philips PCRW1208
Mein Eintrag in der /boot/grub/menu.lst:
title Debian GNU/Linux, kernel 2.6.8-rc1
root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.8-rc1 root=/dev/hde1 ro
savedefault
boot
Kann mir jemand sagen, was ich falsch mache bzw. wie ich das Problem lösen
kann?
