Da PC Hardware leider ziemlich krüppelig ist und nicht von Band booten
kann, sind die Möglichkeiten da naturgemäß arg beschränkt.
Bleibt im Grunde nur Ausweichen auf CD, aber CD Lösungen kann man
nicht wirklich guten Gewissens und ernsthaft als "Backup" bezeichnen.
Immerhin gibt es dafür bereits einige fertige Lösungen.

Ansonsten fällt mir noch mindi/mondo ein, was dann aber nicht von CD
lauffähig ist, aber von CD selbständig ein Backup wieder einspielen
kann. Liegt auch bereits als Debianpaket vor.
Wenn Du seriös Backups machen willst, bleibt natürlich nur eine
Bandlösung. Für's Restore muß man sich dann aber selber was für
Floppy oder CD basteln, das die Daten wieder einspielt oder eine der
gängigen Rescue-CD Lösungen verwenden.
