can't install texlive-base-bin

Hello,
I got into troubles when upgrading from etch to lenny, since texlive did not install. I tried to purge all tex and texlive stuff and started from scratch. The problem is that texlive-base-bin does not configure:

-------------- output of /tmp/fmtutil.XXXXXXXXXX -------------
fmtutil: running `mfw -ini -jobname=mfw -progname=mfw mf.ini' ...
/usr/bin/fmtutil: line 316: mfw: command not found
Error: `mfw -ini -jobname=mfw -progname=mfw mf.ini' failed
mv: cannot stat `mfw.log': No such file or directory
....
This is a summary of all `failed' messages and warnings:
`mfw -ini -jobname=mfw -progname=mfw mf.ini' failed
`omega -ini -jobname=omega -progname=omega omega.ini' failed
--------------------------------------------
So I did the dirty thing (ln -s /usr/bin/mf /usr/bin/mfw), I can get rid of the first message, but "omega problem" still persist - see below. So, until texlive-base-bin is configured, I can't move forward and configure all the other texlive-2007 packages.

I also tried to purge everything of tex|texlive and install texlive-2005 from etch, but it did not work for a similar reason.

Can please someone advice me how to get texlive installed ?

Thanks for any hint in advance,

        best regards
                                 Tomas
