No, they don't, I compared sorted map files.

The one I talked about---the map files of my own fonts---are not
missing in the ~/.texmf-var variant; there's everything ok now (and
that was the cause for our discussion). They are missing in
/var/lib/texmf/fonts/map/pdftex/updmap/pdftex.map. But you're right
there are also map files missing in the ~/.texmf-var variant.

                   ^$file

Ok, first missing line in the ~./texmf-var variant is 'anttb
AntykwaTorunska-Bold "enc-antt ReEncodeFont" <antt.enc <anttb.pfb'
and the above command gives:

/etc/texmf/dvips.old/antt.map

Interesting, because it's part of the old dvips tree (I called
updmap /after/ I moved dvips to dvips.old). But in the ~/.texmf-var
variant there's also an entry for AntykwaTorunska-Bold:

t2a-anttb AntykwaTorunska-Bold "enct2a-antt ReEncodeFont"
<t2a-antt.enc <anttb.pfb

Maybe after all everything is ok, but only the naming scheme has
changed??

pfb: /usr/share/texmf/fonts/type1/public/antt/
tfm: /usr/share/texmf/fonts/tfm/public/antt/
fd: /usr/share/texmf/tex/latex/antt/

If you have further questions I hope I can answer them to you.
