OT: Was that really a problem with map files not being found? I remember
that getting updmap to work with fonts in TEXMFHOME was rather tricky in
teTeX-2.0.2, but my problems were more concerned with the output
locations etc.

For me, updmap called as root writes to /root/.texmf-var/. Also, I see
nothing in the diff between Debian's updmap and the original one that
would check for UID or something like that.
