I find we are discussing uneasy questions (where we basically need to
predict the future of texmf.cnf) for a possible gain that looks minimal
to me: here, running updmap-sys takes ages compared to mktexlsr. Did we
ever get complaints from those "power users" that updating their local
ls-R files from time to time really took too much time?
