It's an ls -al now, so you can check the permissions on the dir too

It still fails, even if I run it as root...

fmtutil: /var/lib/texmf/web2c/latex.fmt installed.
(Fatal format file error; I'm stymied)

Once more for reference; the latex file itself is:

\documentclass{book}
\title {Zen, and the art of motorcycle maintenance}
\begin{document}
\maketitle
hello
\end{document}

PS: If necessary, I have no problems apt-get --purge remov'ing latex packages
to see if the problem still persists after I reinstall them. It might get rid
of valuable forensics as to the cause of this problem, however.
