I think it is not even necessary to change 00updmap.cfg. From my reading
of /usr/bin/updmap, it should be sufficient to put a modified copy of
the relevant map file in the right place under /usr/local/share/texmf.
But maybe using a differently-named map file could make dealing with bug
reports easier...
