Yes, this is also what I do but,
I install using the 2.4.x kernel
and do not use tasksel
and then enter dselect and "unselect" a lot of stuff.
I try to install as little as possible.
If you have a system to play with try this:
In Dselect :-> Select
In a section heading, e.g. Standard packages
mark for removal "_"
It is one of the top line of selection and
you remove every thing!!!
The system will tell you that some thing will break
unless a dependacy is met.
Now comes the fun part, you start selecting what
you think you must have (hint most of Req and Imp).
