No, you don't need a 2.4.x kernel to run Xfree86 4.x. XFree86 4.x will
work on 2.2.20 and 2.4.4+. This includes Sun framebuffer cards aswell as
PCI cards like Permedia, Mach 64/128, etc. The framebuffer cards
includes things like cg6, cg14, Creator/Elite cards, etc.

Also, with recent kernels you can also take advantage of DRM with ATI
128 and Creator cards.

So, it is false that you can only use Xsun servers on sparc-linux :)
