sound doesn't work anymore

hi,

i've debian 2.2 runnig on a sun ultra1. Under the debian standard 2.2.19
kernel i just had to load the cs4231 module and then i could play music,
which then comes through the music box at the front of my ultra1.
Now i compiled the new 2.4.14 kernel and choosed to start this one instead of
2.2.19. it all works fine and i could load the cs4231 module. but when i try
to play an mp3 file, theire won't come any noise through the music box.
so i rebootet the machine and started 2.2.19, but now also under this kernel
it doesn't work anymore. I controlled the mixer settings, but they're
allright.
then i tried to play a wav file with wavp, here i can see that the time
stands still at 00:00:000. so it doesn't really play the file, but there is
also no error message, even in /var/log/messages, i cannot get more
information about this problem.
i tried several files.

so, what could be the problem?

thanks,

 Moritz
