I was up too late last night.  The original post really indicated you
have the newer version which checks for /dev/sunmouse automatically -
my mistake for not looking carefully enough.  3.3.6-10 is the current
version for xsun in potato (and woody is up to the 4.x version so you
probably don't want to go there yet).

Ben's original response was probably on target.  I believe the Speedo
and Type1 fonts are in xfonts-scalable but can't verify that right now.
Try installing that package.  If it's installed, reinstall it to ensure
the postinst has been run correctly.
