Ohh boy do I have defuncts!

Just installed Debian on my SparcStation 5 (32mb ram 2 gb hd 270mhz processor) am loving it
but it is not loving me.
I works fine for a couple hours and then boom all the processes that die hang around
as defuncts. I have installed for the 3rd time and it is at least stable enough I can use it.
The first 2 times it kept defuncting in the middle of installing and screwed it up royally.

Anyways... if anyone has any ideas I am open to trying anything... Here are my stats and a ps list
and thanks in advance for even just looking at this E-mail.

fully on unstable
kernel built from scratch and have tried both 2.2.9 and 2.2.12
