I think it's a great idea, but I suggest contacting upstream first
just to make sure it's something they would like to have (sometimes
they might have other plans). This is just to avoid a scenario where
you would spend time working on this improvement and upstream not
merging it.
>From our side, just patching the strings would be fine (I mean d/patch
here). You can start with that (so we upload the package) and then
work on PO later.
