Thanks for the hint.  Could someone of those packaging forkers confirm
whether they are running into the same problem and what about joining
forces to fix this and proceed in experimental?

I'd like to point out that I have no interest in maintaining sundials
myself but I have a vital interest to get it usable for everybody and
not only private repositories soon.
