Inform, always; wait, not particularly. ie: look at the bug log, make sure you understand everything involved, create a fix, mail the bug log, upload the fix, be prepared to deal with anything that comes up. Non 0-day NMUs just add a "give maintainer a chance to respond" step. Cheers, aj
