No problems with thermal control? I am still experiencing thermal

distros are still experiencing this.

I just tried Xubuntu Dapper PPC desktop version and the problem is
still there.

Please tell me more about what the problem actually is and try with
2.6.17. Thermal control should be implemented by the windfarm_pm91
module on these machines (make sure you also have cpufreq loaded and
windfarm_cpufreq_clamp).

Hi again Ben,

OK, I have gotten the yaboot issue sorted from my side. Firstly, with the "experience" that I have had trying to get Linux working on my G5 single, I can say that I have developed a rule of thumb: if when booting from either a live CD to install or booting from an install CD and my fans start revving like a jet engine, 9 times out of 10 the issue with the thermal control will not have been sorted in the actual install.

I have tried installing Debian Sarge PPC 3.1r2, but it can't find my CD/DVD drive (came with the G5). Debian Etch beta 2 (latest I could find) does install, but at system boot, it runs some scripts, which seem to go without a hitch, then it complains about a 'module unknown not found', then it tries to mount /dev/sdb3 on /root (which fails with a 'no such device'), then comes a "no such file or directory' and then the system defaults into BusyBox and I get the error "/bin/ sh: can't access tty: job conrol turned off". This same scenario occurs with the Xubuntu PPC Dapper Drake LTS install version. An install with the "desktop" or "live" CD version of Xubuntu Dapper reaches the GTK login screen and then freezes. This may be related to similar behavior that I have seen with sound card issues on the G5 in earlier versions of Ubuntu and Fedora Core 4, but it could also be related to the above mentioned problem with install version of Xubuntu, despite the fact that I don't see the same messages (there are some error messages, but they don't seem to be fatal).

All of the install disks that I can boot show the symptom of a problem with thermal control. Whether the actual installs function the same way, I can't say as I haven't been able to get any up and running on my G5. My gut feeling however, is that the problem still exists.

BTW, the Etch gets a repeat error of "Error while running 'modprobe - v sbp2'" a couple of times at the very beginnning of the install, but the install continues and doesn't seem to be fatal. The Etch yaboot.conf also can't boot into OS X, which is by now an old issue that Ubuntu seems to have solved.

Cheers,

Brian
