I have just tried, but it did not help me.

I have several aps in range and setting an essid usually is enough
to have iwconfig show the right one.

Also I have tried a new kernel configuration.

interesting enough I had to compile the above in (_not_ a module)
to make it possible to enable the WEP support as a module.
