While the problem described in the above post remains, I now have the
bcm43xx driver working with softmac. A detailed HOWTO of what I did to
get the Airport Extreme to work on a Post-Feb-2005 Powerbook is here:

I now think there is either a bug in make-kpkg with building 2.6.16
release candidate kernels or the dscape patch changes something in such
kernels to cause make-kpkg to fail. (I'm not sure if the fault is with
the patch, which appears to apply cleanly, or with make-kpkg, or
something else, but I know it never produced a working kernel for me.)
