Yes, you are completely right -- I have found that even though I am
mounting the drives read only ultimately they get randomly trashed.

I suppose that will be my only option. As I have suggested elsewhere,
the logical option would be netatalk (because I'm running OS 9) but
I'd rather not put it on the desktop machine because of the load on
the cpu. OS 9 can do all sorts of things with free utilities -- ftp,
DAV, but maybe not nfs.
